Applications being accepted for “Hong Kong 360” Spring Intensive Course

2019 Spring 6-week intensive course/travel experience: “Hong Kong 360

What: The RSJ is excited to be offering a six-week Spring session (May/June) multimedia reporting course that involves a 9 day trip to Hong Kong from Wednesday, May 29 to Thursday, June 6 (travel dates are tentative, TBC). We are currently gauging interest in the course and are accepting applications.

A team of students will be selected to form a multimedia documentary team to develop, report and produce stories about the vibrant, dynamic and complex city of Hong Kong. This will be building upon the HK 360  project that started last year. A major aspect of the course will be exploring the use of VR/360 video to tell immersive stories.

Students will also be attending the N3 Conference, a renowned international journalism and media conference, in Hong Kong as part of the course itinerary. Students will be able to participate in a diverse array of panel discussions, workshops and sessions about international reporting, social media, media industry career development and hot-button political/social issues. The N3 Conference also hosts several networking events as part of the experience and presents a great opportunity to make professional connections in Asia-Pacific.

Who is eligible to apply:

  • RSJ undergraduate students currently in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th* year of study
  • *Only fourth-year undergrad students who are returning for the Fall 2019 semester OR not applying to graduate until Fall 2019 are eligible to apply
  • Masters of Journalism students in Years 1 and 2
  • Students from other FCAD programs (i.e. RTA, Image Arts, ProComm, currently enrolled in years 2 through 4 as undergraduate or masters students)

Estimated base travel costs:

The RSJ will be covering conference fees (which includes some meals/snacks during the conference days) for all participants. Although costs are highly variable depending on factors such as flight options (i.e. direct vs. layover) and individual dining choices, we would recommend each student be prepared to commit at least $2,000 to cover basic travel needs, including:

  • Economy return flight (Approx. $1,100)
  • Shared hotel accommodation for eight nights (Approx. $500)
  • Food/public transit/entertainment (At least $400)

Travel costs do not include standard course enrolment fees.

Selected participants with relatives in Hong Kong may stay with them during the trip, subject to school approval. For liability and safety reasons, participants not staying with family during the trip will stay in a hotel arranged by Ryerson (last year, we stayed at the ibis in Sheung Wan). Participants are also welcome to extend their stay in Hong Kong past eight nights (or visit other parts of Asia) once the official school trip has concluded provided they return to Toronto by June 12 in order to complete the remaining classes. Students are required to remain in Hong Kong at all times during the course trip and are not permitted to cross the border into Mainland China, even if they have independently acquired a visa.

Selected participants will be required to attend at least two mandatory orientation sessions led by the RSJ and Ryerson International.

Applying for funding:

Students are encouraged to apply for financial support through FCAD’s new Passport fund. Eligible students could receive up to $2,000 from FCAD to help support their participation in international educational experience (like this one!).

Application process:

For the purposes of this course and the demanding nature of the work, we will be assembling a diverse reporting team featuring members with complementary skills and experiences. As such, participants will be chosen by a committee of RSJ/FCAD faculty and staff.

Students interested in applying to join this course will be required to complete/provide the following:

  • A brief questionnaire about your interest in international reporting, travelling to Hong Kong and participating in the project
  • A copy of your CV (Word Doc, Google Doc or PDF)
  • Three work samples that demonstrate your skills (URLs on a Word Doc are fine)
  • We may also contact you for a brief interview

We will be looking to form a balanced, effective, professional reporting team and will be considering the following criteria during our application assessment:

  • Interest in international reporting, global affairs, Asian history/culture
  • Professional/relevant skills or knowledge specific to this project
  • Diversity of perspectives and experiences
  • Demonstrated ability (or interest) in writing/reporting, multimedia, design
  • Ability to work well in group situations under potentially stressful conditions (i.e. language barriers, deadlines, unfamiliar settings)
  • Opportunity: students that have not yet participated in a Ryerson-led international experience may be given additional consideration

Lindsay is the Instructional Technology and Web Design Specialist for the School of Journalism. She joined the staff in 2004 after receiving her Bachelor of Journalism.

Lindsay also works as a freelance web designer and multimedia consultant for clients, providing advice on advancing their online presence, and in the development of company and personal websites. Some of her freelance clients include J-Source and J-School's Canada. As a freelance video editor, Lindsay has created promotional and music videos and has also worked at Global Television News, teaching digital video editing.

In 2021, Lindsay was the recipient of the University's Linda Grayson Administrative Leadership Award for creating and adapting industry programs and platforms and educational technology so that instructors could deliver 50 courses remote learning in fall 2020.
